Happy autumn,
It has been more than two years since I last sent an update.
All is well. I moved back to my home state of Vermont in early 2016, and have been enjoying a quieter life here, closer to nature. Many things have been unfolding since then, but for now, I would just like to share a small piece of writing.
I was invited by the IDFA documentary film festival to select my “top ten” non-fiction works of all time, to be shown at the 30th edition of their festival, in Amsterdam later this month. Not being a scholar of film history, I couldn’t assemble any kind of comprehensive list, so instead, I put together a personal list — ten works that have shaped me as an artist and a person.
The essay, Powers of Ten, introduces these works, and describes the impact they’ve had on my life. Not all of them are films — the list also includes a book, a website, a video game, and a radio project. All ten are beautiful, nourishing, revelatory, life-giving works, each in their own different ways. I would encourage you to seek them out and explore them. They are worth your time. The image above shows six of the famous “Ox-Herding Pictures,” which relate to parts of the essay.
I hope this brief update find you well, and managing to find peace and clarity during these turbulent times.
Sending you love from Vermont,
Jonathan
